What You Just Watched
Two mechanics on the 2026 card trip up more players than anything else. Here is what is actually true — not what feels intuitive.
RULES, NOT OPINIONS
Singles-type hands (the NEWS grouping, or a four-single “year” hand like 2026) forbid jokers and forbid picking up a discard — every tile in that set must be drawn.
Floating pair lines (13579-type, 369-type): the pair can be any number listed in the parenthesis, but the two Kongs must match whichever number you choose as the pair.
Blind pass: you decide how many of your own tiles to pass first. Any tiles you still need from the incoming pass to reach three must go out again without being looked at.
One Coach's Take (Not a Rule)
The line-picking preferences below are one coach's personal strategy, not NMJL rule. Any hand you build must still follow the card exactly as printed.
Pong-pong-kong-kong lines (like the consecutive-run section) are considered easier because jokers and discard pickups work in every part of the hand.
A quint can be a useful pivot when you are dealt several jokers.
Going for a concealed hand is a personal risk call — worth it only with a strong backup line to fall back on.
