Try This 15-Minute Mah Jongg Drill Tonight (It Fixes the Moment Most Players Freeze)

Last updated October 6, 2026

You sit down, flip your 13 tiles, and nothing seems to go together. The Charleston starts, everyone else looks sure of themselves, and you pass three tiles in a panic. Two turns later you realize you just gave away exactly what you needed.

That moment is a skill, not bad luck. And you can train it alone, at your kitchen table, with the drill below. Grab your tiles and your NMJL card: you'll run your first round before the kettle boils.

Before you start

What you need (you already own it)

The drill is called the Mock Charleston. It recreates the most important part of the game, the tile exchange before play begins, without three other people at the table. You need:

Your tiles in a bag, so you draw blind, just like a real deal.

This year's NMJL card. Looking at it while you practice isn't cheating: at a real table it's always in front of you.

A board or a sheet of paper with spaces labeled Right, Across and Left for your passes. A rack is nice, but a flat surface works. (The printable Solo Practice Board in our bundle has it all laid out for you.)

Pro tip from our tutorial

Pull the Jokers and Flowers out of the bag before you deal. You'll never receive a Joker in a Charleston and rarely a Flower, so leaving them in makes your passes unrealistic. Want a little help? Keep one Joker and one Flower on your rack and draw 11 tiles, so you still start with 13.

Steps 1 to 3 · About 3 minutes

Deal, organize, and find your anchors

Step 1, the deal. Draw 13 tiles from the bag (14 if you want to practice as East). Place them face down, then flip them all at once, just like at a real table.

Step 2, organize your rack. This step is non-negotiable. From left to right: Jokers, Flowers, Winds, Dragons, then suited tiles by suit and in number order. It feels slow the first time. After a few rounds it takes seconds, and patterns start jumping out at you.

Step 3, find your anchors. Anchors are the tiles that are hardest to replace, and they should drive every decision you make:

Pairs are your most valuable asset. Jokers can't be used in pairs, so every natural pair is a gift. Don't pass them.

Near-Pungs, two of the same tile, need just one more to become a Pung.

Flowers appear across almost every section of the card. There's rarely a good reason to pass one.

Now match what you see to a section of the card:

Several even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8)

2468

Several odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9)

13579

A sequence like 5-6-7

Consecutive Run

The same number in different suits

Any Like Numbers

Several Winds and Dragons

Winds & Dragons

Lots of pairs, no Jokers needed

Singles & Pairs

Stuck between two sections? Keep the tiles that work for both during the first one or two passes. The tiles you receive will usually tip the balance.

Step 4 · About 5 minutes

Run the Mock Charleston

Here's the heart of the drill. Every time you "pass", place 3 tiles on the board and draw 3 new ones from the bag, as if another player had passed them to you.

FIRST CHARLESTON

Right, Across, Left. Three passes, three draws.

SECOND CHARLESTON

Left, Across, Right. The same, in reverse.

COURTESY PASS

Place 0 to 3 tiles and draw the same number.

Do both Charlestons every time, even if you feel set after the first. You're here for the practice, and the second round is where most players lose good tiles.

Before every pass, ask yourself one question out loud: "Why am I passing this tile, and what pattern am I trying to build?" If you can't answer, don't pass it yet. Take your time: nobody is waiting on you.

Rule check: Jokers can never be passed in the Charleston. If you draw one during a mock pass, keep it and pass a different tile.

This is one drill. The full method has many more.

Step 5 · About 7 minutes

Give yourself 25 draws to reach Mah Jongg

Charleston done. Now play the hand. Put the passed tiles, the Jokers and the Flowers back in the bag and give it a really good shake. Then:

Draw 1 tile. Keep it or discard it.

Place every discard face up in order, so you always know how many turns have passed.

Stop at 25 draws, or earlier if you declare Mah Jongg.

Watch your tile count, the number of tiles you still need. Most hands start six to eight tiles away. If that number hasn't dropped after five or six draws, the tiles are telling you something.

The halfway rule

If you're still more than four tiles away when you're halfway through your draws, start seriously looking at a pivot hand: another line on the card that uses most of the tiles you already hold. Learning to spot it here, with no pressure, is what lets you do it calmly at a real table.

Step 6 · 1 minute

Score yourself honestly

When the 25 draws are up, lay out your rack and count: how many tiles away from Mah Jongg did you finish? That number is your score for the round.

In the round we filmed for our tutorial, we went for a line in Any Like Numbers and finished four tiles away, holding on to some 9s in case the draws pointed somewhere else. Not a win, but a useful round: we knew exactly where the hand had stalled and why.

Three numbers are worth tracking over time:

60s

to pick your section after organizing your rack

2

passes to commit to a specific hand

↓

tiles away at the end, round after round

Your plan for this week

Do it two or three times before your next game

One round teaches you the steps. A few rounds start changing how you see your rack. Fifteen to twenty minutes, two or three times a week, is enough. A session can look like this:

5 min

Warm-up: deal 13, organize, and name your section before looking at the card. Then check your instinct.

10 min

The drill: one full Mock Charleston, then your 25 draws.

2 min

Review: where did you get stuck? Which pass did you regret?

Watch for the small milestones: the first time you pick a section in under a minute, the first time you pivot without losing ground, the first time you call a tile at a real table without second-guessing. That's the drill paying off.

And if you want to go further, this drill is just the starting point. The full method covers pattern recognition, pivot hands, reading discards, defensive play and the rules mistakes that quietly cost games, plus a strategy guide for this year's card. It also comes with the printable Solo Practice Board and the full video walkthrough of this drill, so you can watch every step before you try it.
