The most stressful part of Mah Jongg was never losing.

What on earth am I supposed to do with this hand?

I scan one section of the card. Then another. I spot a line that almost works. But it needs too many tiles. I look at the dragons. I look at the jokers. I look back at the card.

Then the Charleston begins.

Now I have to pass three tiles.

Not eventually. Not after a little more research. Now.

So I let go of a tile I might need. Or I cling to everything because I'm afraid to make the wrong move. Either way, by the time the first pass is over, I already feel behind.

So when my turn came, I still froze. I still picked the “safe” tile instead of the smart one — because at least the safe one wouldn't make me look foolish.

And after two years of Thursdays like that, I had quietly started to wonder if maybe I just wasn't a Mah Jongg person.

Why “just play more” wasn't the answer for me

Renata's advice was always the same: “You just have to play more.” She'd been at it for twelve years. To her, it probably felt true.

But I already played every Thursday. More games weren't the problem. What I lacked was any way to understand why a pass had worked — after the fact, once it was already too late to learn from it.

What ended up next to my rack

Renata put down her tea. “How long have you been playing again?” she asked. “Two years,” I said. She just looked at me. “That's not two-year playing.”
