Same table. Same card. She just saw more in her tiles.

I used to think experienced players got better hands, or had some instinct I'd never learn. Then I found out what they were actually doing in those first ten seconds.

Note 1

The first time I noticed it

The first time I noticed it, I thought she was simply faster than me. We were sitting at the same table. We had received the same number of tiles. We were looking at the same 2026 card.

But while I was still sorting my rack into suits, she had already chosen a direction. Not loudly. Not dramatically. She didn't announce a grand strategy or make a show of studying the card. She moved a few tiles, looked at her hand, and began the Charleston.

I watched her pass three tiles so calmly that I wondered whether she'd been dealt a much better hand than mine.

She hadn't.

When the round was over, I asked her how she had known what to keep.

“I was just looking at the possibilities.”

Her answer

Note 2

I was looking at every possibility at once

That answer stayed with me, because I had been looking at the possibilities too. At least I thought I was.

What I was really doing was looking at every possibility at once. I'd scan the card for a line that matched one part of my hand. Then I'd notice another line that seemed possible. Then I'd see a pair that might become useful and hold onto it just in case.

By the time I had considered everything, the Charleston had started and I still had no idea what I wanted to pass.

What I was doing

Treating every line on the card as equally possible

Holding pairs “just in case”

Deciding what to pass after the Charleston had started

What she was doing

Spotting which tiles gave her flexibility

Knowing when a pair helped and when it only distracted

Separating decisions that could wait from ones that couldn't

She wasn't seeing better tiles. She was seeing more in the tiles she had.

Note 3

From the outside it looks like intuition

I had always assumed experienced players had some instinct beginners couldn't learn. They looked at a hand and seemed to know what it wanted to become. They noticed when another player was collecting a particular group. They knew when a hand was no longer worth chasing and when a pivot was still realistic.

From the outside, it looked like intuition. From the inside, I discovered, it was a way of reading.

That distinction matters. If experience were only about luck and years, there would be nothing to study. You'd play for ten years and hope the knowledge showed up. Experienced players aren't waiting for magic. They're filtering.

They don't think more than you. They eliminate weak directions before those directions eat their attention.

Note 4

The five small questions they keep asking

Watching the experienced players at my table, I realized they were constantly asking small questions. I had never learned to ask them in an organized way.

1

What does this hand already give me?

Start from what's on the rack, not from your favorite line on the card.

2

Which tiles are connected, and which am I keeping out of fear?

Some tiles support a direction. Others only feel hard to let go.

3

What did the Charleston just reveal?

Every pass you receive is information about the table.

4

If this gets difficult, what's the most realistic alternative?

A backup plan, without splitting attention across every section.

5

What are the discards telling me?

The table is talking. Most players aren't listening.

I had learned the rules. I had learned the card. But I had never learned how to observe a moving hand and turn what I saw into a decision. That's why the game felt so different from week to week. I wasn't forgetting the rules. I was failing to recognize the pattern quickly enough.

Note 5

Watching a game think

I wanted to learn to do what she did. Not by asking someone which hand to choose after the fact, but by watching the reasoning as the decision was being made.

That's what made the Mahj Mastery Masterclass different from the scattered videos and quick tips I'd tried before. I could see the tiles on the rack. I could see the choice being made. I could hear why one direction was more realistic than another, why a pair was worth keeping in one situation and not another, and why a hand sometimes needed to change before it was too late.

The complete round was the part that changed everything, because nothing was isolated:

The CharlestonThe tiles passed and received shape the very next decision.
The discardsEach one changes how you read the rest of the table.
A new tileThe shape of the hand shifts, and the backup plan comes into play.
The pivotA small choice from turns ago decides what's possible now.

For the first time, I wasn't watching a list of rules. I was watching a game think.

Note 6

They had learned where to look

I started with one lesson before game night. Then I went back to the sections that made the most sense in context. I paid attention to the moments where the player on screen stopped chasing one direction and moved toward another.

The next time I sat down at the table, I didn't suddenly see everything. But I saw more than before. I noticed the difference between a tile that supported a real direction and one that only looked attractive. I noticed what the first pass was telling me. I stopped treating every change as a mistake and started seeing it as information.

A few turns in, another player discarded a tile that made me reconsider my plan. Before, I would have ignored it or reacted too late. This time I understood what it might mean. I checked my alternatives, looked at what I'd already committed to, and made a deliberate adjustment.

It was a small decision. But it felt like the kind of decision I used to think belonged only to experienced players.

The difference was never a secret supply of better tiles. They had learned where to look.

If you've ever watched another player decide quickly and wondered what they saw that you missed, the answer may not be talent. It may be a process nobody has shown you yet.
