Every Night at 9:15, I Do Something Nobody at My Mah Jongg Table Knows About

A Solo Mastery Bundle customer, in her own words

Shared with the Mahj Mastery Team

I'm going to tell you something that might sound strange. The best part of my day, the part I look forward to from the moment I wake up, is 9:15 PM.

Not because anything exciting happens at 9:15. The opposite, actually. The house goes quiet. My husband settles into his show in the other room. The dog, a twelve-year-old Shih Tzu named Biscuit, curls up on the couch cushion next to me. The same spot every night.

And I pull out my tiles.

Not to play a game. There's no one to play with at 9:15 on a Wednesday. I pull them out to practice. To work on my game. To spend fifteen minutes doing the thing that has, quietly and without anyone noticing, transformed how I play American Mah Jongg.

I set up the tiles on the little TV tray table I bought specifically for this. I unfold the practice board on my lap. I open the tracker to a fresh row and write the date.

Then I deal myself a hand. And for the next fifteen minutes, I'm not a wife. Not a mother. Not a grandmother. Not someone's anything. I'm just a player. Working on her game. Getting better at something that's entirely, completely, unapologetically hers.

Before

For two years, Mah Jongg was something I did on Tuesdays

I didn't always have this.

I showed up. I played. I lost more than I won. I drove home feeling vaguely frustrated but unable to pinpoint why. By the following Tuesday, I'd forgotten whatever I'd learned, if I'd learned anything at all.

The problem was obvious in hindsight: I had no continuity. No thread connecting one Tuesday to the next. Each game was an isolated event. I wasn't building on anything. I was just showing up and hoping that this week would be different.

It never was.

My friend Joanne, the one who's been playing for sixteen years, once told me, "You just have to play more." But I couldn't play more. I have one night a week. That's what my schedule allows. One night. Two hours. And in those two hours, I'm under pressure, I'm making decisions too fast, and I'm too embarrassed to stop and think about why I made them.

That's not practice. That's survival.

The Sunday night ad

"Fifteen minutes. I had fifteen minutes."

I found the Solo Mastery Bundle on a Sunday night. I was scrolling through my phone, half-watching a show, and an ad caught my eye. Something about practicing Mah Jongg alone. About not needing four players to improve.

I clicked. I read the page. And one line hit me so hard I read it three times:

"The players who improve fastest aren't the ones with the most game nights. They're the ones who study with intention, even 15 minutes between sessions."

Fifteen minutes. I had fifteen minutes every single night after the house went quiet and before I fell asleep. I'd been spending them scrolling through nothing. What if I spent them on something?

I bought the bundle. I printed everything that night. The practice board. The tracker. The cheat sheet. The scoreboard.

Week one

Monday night, 9:15 PM. First session.

I dealt myself a hand, opened the guide, and ran my first Mock Charleston.

It was awkward. I wasn't sure I was doing it right. But the instructions were clear: deal the tiles, simulate the passes, decide what to keep, write down why. Eight minutes. Done.

Monday

Session 1. First Mock Charleston. Awkward, eight minutes, done.

Tuesday

Game night at Joanne's. For the first time in two years, I passed tiles on purpose instead of by accident.

Wednesday

Session 2. Hand-building drills: deal 13, pick a line, pick a backup, write both down.

Thursday

Session 3. Another Mock Charleston. I started reading what came back from the passes.

That Tuesday, nothing dramatic happened. But I noticed something: during the Charleston, I didn't panic. I kept a pair of 4 Bams because I'd practiced that exact decision the night before.

By the end of the first week, I had five sessions logged. Five nights of fifteen minutes. Just over an hour total. And I could already feel something shifting.

By the end of week two, I was picking hands in under thirty seconds. I was seeing pivot options I'd never noticed before. I was passing in the Charleston with a strategy instead of a prayer.

Week three

Something happened at Joanne's table that I will never forget

I was dealt a hand with no obvious path. Six months ago, I would have stared at the card for four minutes and picked something random.

Instead, I looked at my tiles and saw a Consecutive Run forming, one I'd practiced three times that week during my evening sessions. I knew the tile demand was low. I knew my pivot. I picked it in fifteen seconds.

Eight turns later, I called Mah Jongg.

Joanne put down her wine glass. "How long have you been playing again?" "Two years," I said. She shook her head. "That's not two-year playing. What are you doing?"

I almost didn't tell her. Because part of me liked having a secret. Part of me liked being the one who was quietly, privately getting better while everyone else just showed up on Tuesdays and hoped.

But I told her. Because she's my friend. And because every woman at that table deserves to know that improvement isn't about talent or time. It's about method.

By week four, Joanne said it. The words I'd been waiting two years to hear: "You seem so much more confident at the table."

Two months in

It's become my favorite ritual. My secret advantage.

I am more confident. Not because I'm suddenly a genius. Because I practice. Because I have a method. Because every night at 9:15, while Biscuit sleeps and the house is quiet, I spend fifteen minutes getting better at something I love.

The thing nobody at the table knows about. They just see the results. Here's what my tracker says after two months:

47

sessions logged in my tracker

25%→55%

hands completed, from about a quarter to over half

~2×

my scores have nearly doubled

And I'm playing sections of the card I never would have attempted before. Sections I practiced alone, at night, without anyone watching me fail.

The Solo Mastery Bundle didn't just give me a practice system. It gave me something that was mine. Something I do for myself, by myself, that makes me better at something I care about.
