The Fastest Way to Get Better at American Mah Jongg

A quick guide for Mahj Mastery players

8 Reasons Solo Practice Is the Fastest Way to Get Better at American Mah Jongg (No Table, No Opponents Needed)

By the Mahj Mastery Team

Last updated October 1, 2026

Summary: Most players only improve on game night. The problem? Game night happens once a week, if you're lucky. Between games, your skills sit still.

Solo practice changes that. With your tile bag, your NMJL card and a simple board, you can run a full game on your own: the Charleston, the draws, the discards, even the pivot. Here is exactly how it works, and why it makes you sharper at a real table.

Simple setup

You already own almost everything you need

No fourth player to chase down. No scheduling. No table to set up. Solo practice runs on three things: your tile bag, your NMJL card and your Solo Practice Board.

That's it. Which means you can practice on a Tuesday night, a rainy afternoon or the morning before your game, whenever you have fifteen minutes.

The Charleston

You can rehearse the Charleston without anyone waiting on you

The Charleston is where many hands are won or lost, and it's the part most players rush at the table. Alone, you can slow it down and think through every pass.

Deal yourself 13 tiles, then:

First pass: discard 3 tiles face-down, draw 3 from the bag.

Second pass: discard 3 tiles face-down, draw 3 from the bag.

Third pass: discard 3 tiles (optional blind pass), draw 3 from the bag.

Then choose to STOP or CONTINUE, and move on to the Courtesy Pass.

Each pass forces the same question you face on game night: which tiles am I really building toward, and which am I just holding on to?

Prepare to play

Every session starts exactly like a real game

Once the Charleston is done, you reset the board so the game plays out honestly:

Return all Charleston tiles to the bag.

Shuffle thoroughly.

You now have 13 tiles in hand. Time to play.

No shortcuts, no peeking. That's what makes the practice transfer to the table.

Gameplay

You get the same draw-and-discard rhythm as game night

Each turn is simple: draw 1 tile, then keep it or discard it face-up on the board.

You keep going until you declare MAH JONGG or fill all 24 spaces on the board. That limit matters: it gives every game a clock, so you learn to feel when a hand is running out of time.

Real-game feel

You can simulate your three opponents' discards

After your turn, draw 1 tile for the player on your right, 1 for the player across and 1 for the player on your left. Place each one face-up on the board.

Suddenly the tiles you need are disappearing into the discard pile, just like they would at a real table. You start noticing what's gone, what's still live, and what that means for your hand.

Shortcut: just remember that 3 tiles are discarded before it's your turn again.

The pivot advantage

It's the safest place to train your pivot

Knowing when to abandon a hand is one of the hardest skills in Mah Jongg. At a live table, there's pressure and no time to think. Alone, you can practice it on purpose. When tiles stop coming your way:

  • 01

Recognize the hand isn't getting there.

  • 02

Shift intentionally to a backup hand.

  • 03

Don't wait for the hand to fail: pivot proactively.

Why this works

Every session trains the instincts you use at a real table

Solo practice isn't a watered-down version of the game. It isolates the skills that matter most and lets you repeat them. Each session trains you to:

Make fast draw-and-discard decisions

Track how many turns have passed

Read the board like a real game

Build hand-reading instincts

You'll learn to adjust your hand as the game develops, just like you would at a real table.

Fits your week

Fifteen minutes is enough

You don't need a whole afternoon. A Mock Charleston takes about 5 minutes; a hand-building drill about 10. Consistency beats duration: a few short sessions a week add up faster than one long one.

And it works whether you play at a physical table or online. The decisions are the same, so the practice carries over everywhere you play.

Made it this far? Then you already know the method.

What makes it stick is having the right tools in front of you: a board to lay out the game, a reference for the Charleston, a strategy guide for this year's card, and a way to see your progress session after session.

That's exactly what we put together in one bundle, for players who don't want to wait until game night to get better.
